Value Added Fruit Processing Opportunities

A Provincial ministry was looking to gain insight into opportunities to enhance the domestic fruit processing industry to expand economic opportunities and enhance domestic food security.

• Interviewed dozens of stakeholders including industry association leaders and both large and small fruit growers and processors to better understand the current state of the domestic fruit farming and processing market, including infrastructure capacity constraints.
• Researched domestic and international food production trends for the four fruits being analyzed to better understand the opportunity landscape.
• Matched production opportunities with farmer challenges to arrive at a set of processing opportunities that have both a large potential market and help to alleviate material farming challenges.
• Developed a financial model for each opportunity so fruit processors would better understand the financial returns that each opportunity could generate based on capital and operating costs.

The opportunities have been shared with a number of the industry stakeholders who are evaluating the opportunities to decide on their next steps.
