A provincial specialized health services program was struggling to keep up with high demand for treatment services, leading to long wait times for patients. They required modeling to assess the impact of mitigation strategies so they could focus their efforts on improving service and patient outcomes.
- Our Approach
- Developed a discrete event simulation model that modeled the treatment services that patients required, the resources (staff and specialized equipment) needed to deliver treatment, and scheduling constraints.
- Worked with operational leads to identify mitigation strategies to allow patients to receive treatment in a more timely manner, such as extended hours or moving patients to locations with available capacity.
- Reviewed the assessment and impact of different mitigation strategies with the leadership team.
- Outcome
The modeling and analysis allowed the provincial program to focus their efforts on pursuing the most impactful mitigation strategies to reduce wait times for patients.
