Quantifying & Responding to Industry Shocks
Canadian Wine Industry Association
Project Focus Areas
- Context
Wine industries all over the world are feeling the effects of climate change and grapevine disease. In British Columbia, the wine industry was looking to guide an effective policy response to changing growing conditions. This required gaining a more fulsome understanding of the root causes and impacts of diminishing grape yields.
- Our Approach
- Analyzed historical wine grape crop yields and their relationship to various environmental events and modelled anticipated grape crop yields under various future environmental scenarios.
- Quantified the adverse economic impact of negative shocks to grape and wine production, including job losses, commercial and government tax revenue losses, and unanticipated capital expenditure requirements.
- Developed a set of policy recommendations for responding to changing climate conditions through extensive engagement with both local and international wine industry experts.
- Outcome
These engagements have helped align industry stakeholders on a set of policy objectives. The wine industry has had success in advocating for public support of some of these initiatives, and support for the remaining initiatives remains a key priority.
